Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to Return to ’Sherlock Holmes 3’ on Christmas 2020

While we’re all recovering from Avengers: Infinity War, Robert Downey Jr. is already set up for his next big movie. After years of silence, it’s finally been confirmed: he and Jude Law will return for Sherlock Holmes 3!
It’s been seven years since the second Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movie, A Game of Shadows, was released. In the time since, there have been rumors every other month regarding a third installment, but nothing official. Now, Warner Bros. has given an official date: Christmas, 2020!
Downey has mentioned Sherlock Holmes 3 more and more in the past months, as cast and crew seemed to be circling an agreement. Downey and Law will reprise their roles of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively. It’s unclear whether other recurrent characters will return, like Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler or Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes.
Ritchie hasn’t been confirmed to direct, although it seems likely after being behind the camera for the first two installments. The Sherlock Holmes films firmly rely on Ritchie’s aesthetic, and it wouldn’t make sense if he didn’t return.
According to Deadline, Chris Brancato (co-creator of Narcos) will be writing the screenplay. The movie will be produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram and Susan Downey.
These past few years also saw star Downey become the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. With numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance as the heart of the franchise, Downey had little time for anything else. Now that his last Marvel film is just one year away, his schedule is finally opening up to other projects.
In the time since the last Holmes movie, Law and McAdams have also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. McAdams played Christine Palmer in Doctor Strange, while Law will make his début as Mar-Vell in next year’s Captain Marvel. However, that’s not the only big film on his roster. Law’s also set to play Albus Dumbledore in this year’s Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The still-untitled Sherlock Holmes 3 will hit theaters on December 25th, 2020.
